A summary of the Great War, and the time that followed…

The land of Everon was a quiet and gentle land filled with farmers, and merchants.  Indeed, all of Everon was prosperous under the the fair and just rule of the wizard, King Orin.  King Orin ruled the land from the city of Kaldania, a magnificent and enormous city strategically placed on the isthmus, separating the land of Everon to the south, from the land of Madancia to the north.

Yet all good things are fated to end and the rule of King Orin was no exception. In the still dark of a warm summer night, an assassin’s blade took the life of King Orin leaving his people in mourning and despair.  Sadness and despair would soon give way to horror as it was learned that the assassination was a prelude to invasion.  Far to the North in the land of Madancia, the evil sorceress Ragna was gathering her dark forces, armies of Orcs, Goblins, Giants, and Undead and they were preparing to march on the now vulnerable Everon.

King Orin had been buried for less than a week when his daughter, Princess Loriana, rallied the people of Everon to face the coming evil.  Her people could not help but listen to the words of the stern and fearless daughter of King Orin.  Farmers put down their shovels and took up the axe, merchants closed their shops and and took up the sword.

Aldon, defender of Kaldania

Aldon, defender of Kaldania

War drew ever near it became apparent that the future of Everon hung in the balance and that future would be decided at Kaldania the Capital of Everon.  As the defenses of the city were being readied and troops were organized, a young officer’s by the name of Aldon was quickly becoming known throughout the city.  Aldon’s military ability was only surpassed by his ability to inspire and lead his soldiers.  It wasn’t long before he was attracting the attention of everyone in the city, including the eye of Loriana.

As the impending war loomed ever closer, the people of Kaldania found something joyous to celebrate, the newfound romance between their beloved Loriana and the dashing Aldon, the city’s new champion.

On the day Ragna’s evil armies came before the walls and gates of Kaldania she was not met with despair as she expected of a city still recovering from the loss of King Orin, she instead was met with iron determination, stalwart hearts, and cold hard steel.

The seige lasted for weeks as Aldon matched every move of Ragna’s, rallying the defenders of Kaldania with his shining blade which was always where the battle was the thickest.  Neither giant nor undead apparition could stand before his skill and might.  The fiends of Ragna’s army could find no foothold, no crack in the defenses with which to exploit.  As control of her army was beginning to fray, she schemed to rob the defenders of their heart.  Ragna enchanted a deadly, poisonous arrow and gave it to her greatest assassin, the legendary Suttar.

As the forces of darkness broke and ran for the third time that day, the cheers of the defenders were cut short when the word spread of a horrible disaster.  Aldon had been struck down by poisonous arrow fired from Suttar while the action of the battle was thickest.  Princess Loriana was rushed to his side since no aid or spell could seem to stop the foul poison coursing through his body.  As Princess Loriana held his hand, he whispered to her his final words, and then died in her arms.

Ragna prepared her army for their fourth charge, the final charge that would surely win the day and the war.  Suddenly she was informed that Kaldania had opened it’s gates!  Expecting surrender now that Aldon was slain, she and her personal guard approached the gate.  Fear and horror touched her icy heart as she was instead greeted by the charging defenders of Kaldania.  As her personal guard were cut down, Ragna realized the day was lost and vowing revenge at the rapidly closing defenders, Ragna cast a spell and disappeared in a puff of smoke.  Now leaderless, her army broke ranks and fled the field, defeated.

In the years that followed Kaldania was rebuilt for much of it was destroyed in the war.  By royal decree, the city was then renamed Aldon’s Stand so that no one would ever forget Aldon’s sacrifice.

Princess Loriana never recovered from losing Aldon and she never married.  Upon her death the rule of Everon passed to a newly created Council, which was filled by representatives from the cities of Everon.

300 years have now passed and sinister things are afoot.  It is whispered that Ragna still lives and stirs in the lands to the North.  Orcs and Goblins have been seen in greater abundance, and it is even rumored that the dead grow restless.  It is whispered that the streets of Aldon’s Stand hold dark secrets; secrets the Council are powerless to uncover.  Has Ragna really returned?

The Council seeks answers, and the people seek heroes…
